Proper Motion is a barrel-select clonal blend of Pinot Noir from Tidalstar Vineyard in Yamhill-Carlton. About the Wine

Proper Motion Vineyard Block Proper Motion is an expression of a star’s movement across the sky, measured in relation to other celestial bodies over years or even centuries. Astronomers rely on such exacting and patient measurements to derive a deeper understanding of the universe and our place in it.

In winemaking, like astronomy, it’s not enough to simply measure one variable at a fixed point in time. You must understand each observed change in relation to a universe that is in constant transition. Proper Motion is a barrel-select clonal blend of Pinot Noir, sourced from Tidalstar Vineyard. It is a distinct and vibrant expression of this land and the dynamic interplay between the forces that shape it.

Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
Boysenberry, black currant, freshly tilled earth and a hint of wet stone swirl from the glass. A mouthful of black cherry, dried blueberry and baking spice linger on the gently resinous palate. There’s density and richness without being overbearing and the tannin-acid interplay is thought-provoking.

Winemaking Notes
The 2017 Proper Motion is made from a mix of 667 and 115 Pinot Noir clones from blocks that are tucked away in the southeastern corner of the property. We fermented this fruit with a mix of native and commercial yeast and settled the wine for 10 days before barreling. A mix of new and used oak barrels were used to bring richness and resinous flavors. After 10 months of aging we racked the wine into neutral oak puncheons. This extra time helped round out the palate and soften tannins, resulting in exceptional structure and dark fruit notes.
