About the Wine

Proper Motion Vineyard BlockThe sloping hills of Tidalstar Vineyard hug the western edge of the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. Before the sun rushes down over the valley each morning, there is a brief window when these vines have the sun’s warmth all to themselves.

So much of winemaking is timing—being attuned to moments of transition, recognizing opportunities to coax out expressions of the land that are unique and true. Shy Horizon is a select clonal blend of exceptional Pinot Noir from Tidalstar Vineyard. It is a distinct and elegant wine, reflecting the careful attention paid to the nuances of each vineyard row and each moment in the process.

Winemaker Notes
The 2017 Shy Horizon is from a warm east-facing slope. The warm summer allowed these east-facing 777 clones to gain optimal ripeness. We fermented some of this fruit whole cluster, and with a mix of native and commercial yeast for complexity. Our barrel selections, including Billon, Mercurey and Sirugue, lifted aromatics and floral flavors, brought structure and accentuated the plum, dark cherry, baking spice and leather notes [respectively]. The team tasted every vessel and produced multiple blending trials while aging for 18 months. After the selected clonal blend was agreed upon, the wine was sent to bottle.
